Kiri asa-no-ha

Kiri mean paulownia. The kiri asa-no-ha pattern is normally made in rows, and looks quite spectacular spanning across a set of two or four shoin-shōji doors.

The small cross pieces in the top half allow some creative flexibility. There is no set shape or size — they can be bigger, smaller, thicker or thinner than the examples in the photos.

Overall, an interesting pattern to make, and there's a great feeling once the final locking piece goes in with just the right tension.

Naka-nuki shoji with kiri central band (Book 2; Kindle Vol. 3)

The multiple angles required for the kiri make this one of the more difficult and time-consuming patterns in the square jigumi.
