Japanese screens are, traditionally, opaque panels (fusuma), wooden panels, or paper-backed kumiko panels set in a wooden stand. Since ancient times, they have been used as a simple and temporary means of partitioning a room, or concealing an activity or area. In traditional style houses they were often placed between the entrance and front hall to serve as both a decorative item and a screen to prevent visitors from viewing into the internal areas of the house.
Today, they still fulfil this function, and can add an elegant, traditional Japanese feel to any room.
The following are examples of some of the standard patterns available, and an indicative price. These are all three-panel screens, however, you can also order two- or four-panel screens. Prices will vary depending on the type of timber you prefer, and also on the number of panels in the screen. Where possible, we will try to accommodate any timber preference, however, timber types will be limited if you should choose one of the more intricate patterns.
All shoji screens are hand-plane finished. If required, we can apply two coats of clear varnish to the frames only at an additional cost. We do not stain the timber. Stain gives the timber an unnatural colour, so if, for example, you would like a walnut-coloured frame, we will make the frame in walnut.
The paper backing is thick, white professional quality shoji paper applied using traditional methods and quality shoji glue.
The examples on this page are simple patterns, however, if you would like a more complex pattern or even landscape feature, please do not hesitate to enquire. Almost all of the patterns and combination of patterns I have included in the Kumiko pages can be adapted to a folding shoji screen.
The lead time is about three weeks for the simple patterns, but will vary for the more detailed shoji screens depending on the complexity of the internal patterns.
The size of individual panels is 1400 x 460 mm. Minor variations on this size are possible, but these will require a separate design quote.
Prices do not include GST, so Australian residents should add 10% to the listed indicative price. The delivery fee depend on your location and number of panels in the screen. A non-refundable deposit of 25% of the screen price will be required when placing the order.
